The Past Glimpses
The Australian and Overseas Telecommunications Corporation Limited (AOTC) was formed in 1992 after the merger of Overseas Telecommunications Commission and Telecom Australia. In 1993, Telstra Corporation Limited became the legal corporate name of this merged entity. The local trading name, Telecom Australia, was replaced with Telstra in 1995 to make Telstra distinguished from other telecommunication businesses in increasingly deregulated and competitive markets. The company has been operating globally as Telstra since 1993.
Telstra encountered competition in 1990s from Optus; Australia’s second largest communication company, and other smaller providers. Telstra once owned the fixed-line telephone network, but as a result of upgrade to the National Broadband Network (NBN) nationwide, the Australian Government acquired the lines’ ownership in 2007. Telstra has played a huge role in this upgrade and supplying required resources to the government, due to which Telstra was given priority on the new network.
In 2011, Telstra formed Telstra Digital with an aim to improve digital channels usage for customer service. The same year, Telstra Digital launched CrowdSupport, an online forum to crowd source customer service that acquired 463,000 posts by 2017. Deloitte’s Centre for the Edge cited it as an example of “scaling at the edge”. Telstra Digital’s new mobile smartphone optimized website version, iphone app and online mobile phone shop were also launched in 2011. Telstra’s Smartphone and Facebook apps started in 2012 with millions of downloads. In September 2013, Telstra formed Telstra Health. In an effort to digitalize the transactions, Telstra formed “Digital First” in 2014. The Digital Transformation Center of Telstra started designing new digital tools for its service systems the same year. Periscope, a popular customer service by Telstra was launched in 2015. As of 2016, Telstra owned a range of 360 retail stores across Australia. The same year Telstra acquired the cloud service provider Kloud.
